ESG & Environment

3 courses

Environmental claims are now a consumer law problem as much as an environmental one. The ACCC and ASIC have both acted on greenwashing, and misleading representations about sustainability carry the same exposure as any other false claim. Meanwhile operational staff still need to know what their site licences, waste rules and pollution duties actually require of them day to day.

Which one do you need?

Introduction to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is the orientation course for boards, managers and anyone contributing to sustainability reporting. Greenwashing is for marketing, communications, product and investor relations teams, the people who write the claims that get tested. Environmental Compliance is the operational course, aimed at sites and functions with obligations under environmental protection law. Most organisations run ESG for leadership and Greenwashing for the teams making public statements.

Common questions

Is greenwashing actually enforceable?

Yes. Misleading or deceptive conduct and false or misleading representations under Australian consumer law apply to environmental and sustainability claims. The ACCC has published guidance on environmental claims for business, and ASIC has taken action on sustainability-related claims by financial products.

Who should take the greenwashing course?

Anyone who signs off on a public claim: marketing, communications, packaging, product, procurement and investor relations. The problem is rarely intentional. It comes from vague wording and claims that cannot be substantiated when someone asks.

Do we need environmental compliance training if we are an office-based business?

Probably not at the operational level. Environmental Compliance is aimed at organisations with site, waste, emissions or licensing obligations. An office business is better served by the ESG introduction and Greenwashing.
