Directors carry personal duties they cannot hand off, and the people who sign contracts, use other organisations' material or make decisions for a public body carry their own. These obligations are specific, and the mistakes are quiet ones: a clause agreed by email, an image reused without a licence, a decision made without considering the human rights implications.

Which one do you need?

Essential Compliance Duties for Directors is for boards and company officers. Contract Law suits anyone who negotiates, signs or administers agreements, including staff who create binding commitments without realising it. Intellectual Property is for marketing, product and anyone reusing third-party material. Two are Victorian and specific: Local Government Act Victoria for council staff, and Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities for Victorian public authorities and their service providers.

Common questions

Who needs the directors course?

Directors and company officers, and often company secretaries and senior executives who prepare board material. It is also used as induction for first-time not-for-profit board members, who often carry the same duties without the same support.

Do the Victorian courses apply outside Victoria?

No. Local Government Act Victoria and the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities are state-specific. Councils and public authorities in other states have their own equivalent frameworks and should not use these as a substitute.

Why train general staff in contract law?

Because commitments get made in emails, purchase orders and verbal agreements by people who were never told they had authority to bind the organisation. The course is aimed at recognising when something is contractual and when to escalate, not at drafting.

Does the intellectual property course cover AI-generated content?

Check the current course outline before assuming. Ownership and licensing questions around generative AI output are moving quickly. The Generative AI course in the Technology & Digital category covers workplace use of those tools directly.
