A safety duty does not stop at the office door. Where an employer directs or permits work from home, the home becomes a workplace for the purposes of that duty, and privacy and security obligations travel with the laptop. The employer cannot inspect every spare room, so the control is a documented process: assess the setup, set the rules, train the person, keep the record.

Which one do you need?

Common questions

Are we liable for injuries at an employee's home?

Work health and safety duties extend to workers carrying out work for the business, and where that work happens at home, the duty generally follows. Workers compensation claims for home-based injuries are decided case by case. Get advice on your own scheme rather than assuming either way.

Do we have to inspect the home office?

Physical inspection is rarely practical. The usual approach is a documented self-assessment against a checklist, with the employer reviewing it and acting on anything flagged. That is what the Checklist course is designed to produce.
